The High Line of New York City

Located on the West Side of Manhattan in Chelsea, this 1.45 mile stretch of old elevated rail line makes the perfect walk for when you're out on that special date. Dating back to the 1930's when rail lines were elevated to protect the people on the street, this relic of times past has been redeveloped to provide a beautifully landscaped path with incredible views of the streets below as well as the city beyond. Beginning at the intersection of Gansevoort Street and Washington Street in the Meatpacking District, the High Line extends up through the neighborhood of Chelsea to 20th Street. Plans are underway to extend it further but for now you'll just have to enjoy the 2.33 kilometre stroll.

Benches and chairs line the beautifully landscaped path so I'd recommend this walk around sunset when is it absolutely gorgeous to sit down and relax enjoying the sights and sounds of the city.

Directions to the High Line:

The best and most enjoyable way to get to the High Line is to walk North on West 4th Street from 7th Avenue. This intersection is easily accessible from the #1 Subway stop at Christopher Street. West 4th is a bustling street located in the heart of Greenwich Village. Various small shops, bookstores, and cafes line this street making for an authentic New York experience. You'll then want to take West 4th up until you reach 13th Street. Once you come to 13th Street, make a left hand turn and you'll see Gansevoort Street. Walk along Gansevoort Street until you reach Washington Street and then look up, you can't miss it!
