The Staten Island Ferry

....I'm just going to start this one off by saying it is free. Yes, free. I always recommend this to anyone traveling or living in New York. Now you may ask why, why would I want to ride the Staten Island Ferry?  Here's why, the route of the ferry passes and allows for great photo opportunities of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and the southern tip of Manhattan. Also for all you love birds out there I am handing you a free date!

Each way only takes about 20 minutes and while you do have to disembark the ferry upon arrival on Staten Island, simply stay in the station and re-board that same ferry just a few minutes later. It's technically a commuter ferry but I bet a good amount of people on that ferry are just there for the ride like you. Now, if you do decide to stay on Staten Island, you're on your own! If you're smart and hop back on the ride back will be just as amazing as the way there. I'd also recommend this ride around sunset. With the sun sinking into the horizon, this is a great way for anyone to see New York from the water and capture this incredible moment in New York City.

Some fun ferry facts:

-The Staten Island Ferry provides 20 million people a year (60,000 passengers a day not including weekends) with ferry service between St. George on Staten Island and Whitehall Street in lower Manhattan.

-In 1817 the cost to cross the harbor was 25 cents and half the price for children. This was the cost to ride the Nautilus, the first steam ferry to make the famous trip.

-The 5 cent fare was established in 1897 and in latest until 1972 when the fare was raised to 10 cents. From 1975-1990 the fair was increased to 50 cents and finally on July 4th, 1997 the fare for foot passengers was eliminated all together.

With that said, enjoy!!
